How do you apply the 5S at work?
Your first step in making your workplace more efficient and productive is to organize everything. An organized workspace, clean desk and tidy room will make everyone more productive. The five "S"'s (Sort. Shine. Clean. Separate. And Store) help to maximize space and ensure efficiency. This session will go over each of these steps and show how they can be used in any setting.
-
Sort.Put away papers and clutter so that you don't waste valuable time searching for something that you know is there. This means that you should put things where they are most useful. If you find yourself frequently referring to something, place it near the location where you do your research. Also, consider whether you really need it. If it isn't useful, get rid!
-
Shine. Anything that could cause harm or damage to others should be thrown out. For example, if you have a lot of pens lying around, find a way to store them safely. A pen holder might be a good investment, as it will prevent you from losing pens.
-
Sweep. Keep surfaces clean to avoid dirt building up on furniture or other items. You may want to invest in some dusting equipment to ensure that all surfaces are as clean as possible. You can even set aside a specific area for sweeping and dusting to keep your workstation looking tidy.
-
Separate. When you are ready to dispose off your trash, it is a good idea to separate it into bins. Trash cans are usually placed strategically throughout the office so that you can easily throw out the garbage without searching for it. It's a great idea to place trash bags beside each bin, so you don’t have to go through tons of garbage to find what it is.
